With over 200 rivers, creeks, and streams, it’s no wonder Colorado is so popular for fly fishing. Fly fishing in the Rockies offers up incredible views, great fish to catch, and three hundred days of sunshine, making this a great activity for both visitors and locals. However, fly fishing isn’t just throwing a hook into a pond; it requires a little more patience and finesse. Here is everything you need to know to get into fly fishing in the Rockies.

Flies:

There are three main types of flies with tons of different varieties. Having a good understanding of the different types of flies and what they do is the first step to making your first fishing trip a success. The Dry Fly is a type of fly that floats on the surface of the water. This makes it easiest to see the fish biting, as well as where the fly is. The Nymph is considered the most productive type of fly because it is below the surface, which is where fish usually feed. The Streamer looks like something the fish would want to eat and the way it moves is very tempting to them. When you go fly fishing in the Rockies, check a local fishing report to see what fisherman are catching to help determine the best flies for your trip.

Types of fish:

While there are many types of fish in Colorado’s rivers, the most common for fly fishers to catch are Cutthroat trout, Rainbow trout, Brown trout, and Brookies. These fish are all usually about a foot long and thrive in a variety of environments.

Season:

Fly fishing is possible all twelve months of the year in Colorado! The peak season is July through September, but consider going in the winter months to get discounts and to ditch the crowds. Keep in mind that the type of fish you catch can change based on the time of year you go.

Things to keep in mind:

In the state of Colorado, you do need a license to fish. You can get a one day, five day, or annual permit. It is also important to make sure you are fishing in a public area so that you are not trespassing, and catch and release is the best method so there will always be fish to catch. Lastly, be considerate of others. Most fishers love their peace and quiet, so give each other space to enjoy your time spent on the river respectfully.
